How Does the AI Actually Work? — FAQ

Is CLETUS really using AI, or is it scripted?
Real AI. CLETUS uses Claude (an Anthropic large language model) as the reasoning layer. When a visitor asks a question, CLETUS sends the question plus relevant chunks of your knowledge base to Claude, which reasons from that context and generates a natural response. No decision trees, no pre-written branches, no if-this-then-that scripting.
What AI model powers CLETUS?
Claude by Anthropic — one of the two leading frontier AI models alongside GPT. We chose Claude because it's particularly strong at instruction-following (staying within the knowledge base you provide) and honest refusals (saying 'I don't know' instead of fabricating). Both traits matter for a customer-facing AI.
Can CLETUS lie or make up answers?
It's trained to avoid fabrication. If a visitor asks something outside your knowledge base, CLETUS is explicitly instructed to say so rather than guess. We'd rather capture a lead and have you follow up than have the AI invent an answer that's wrong. That said, no AI is 100% perfect — your dashboard logs every conversation so you can review anything that went sideways and correct the knowledge base.
What if CLETUS gets confused?
Same handling as 'doesn't know' — honest deferral plus lead capture. You review the conversation transcript, identify what information was missing, add it to the knowledge base. Next similar conversation handles it correctly. The system learns through YOUR corrections, not through fuzzy AI training.
Can I see what customers are asking?
Yes — full conversation logs in your dashboard. Search by keyword, filter by date, export to CSV. You can also take over any conversation in real time if you want to jump in and respond as yourself.
Does CLETUS remember returning visitors?
Within a session, yes — CLETUS remembers what was said earlier in the conversation. Across sessions (same visitor returning days later), not by default — we don't store identifying info unless the visitor shares it (email, phone). If you want persistent user recognition, we can enable it for logged-in visitors on your site.
Can I turn CLETUS off during certain hours?
Not exactly — but you can configure it to behave differently. Instead of turning off at 5pm, configure a 'closed hours' message or a different escalation path (no live transfer, take a message only). Most customers find 'off hours' behavior more useful than fully disabling the AI.
What languages does CLETUS speak?
English out of the box. Spanish is available as a one-time add-on at setup — CLETUS detects the visitor's language and responds in kind. Other languages (French, German, Portuguese, Italian) are available on request — ElevenLabs voices exist for all of these.
How is my business data protected?
Your knowledge base is stored in your private workspace. We don't train our models on your content or share it with other clients. Conversation logs are encrypted at rest and in transit. You can delete any conversation or your entire knowledge base anytime. We're not a data-broker business; we're a subscription software business.
Can I edit what CLETUS knows in real time?
